The last time Casino had its own Dancing with the Stars event was in 2018.

Richmond Valley mayor Robert Mustow danced at that event.

“It was hard not to be nervous,” Mr Mustow said.

“I have two left feet but it is really worthwhile.”

The Dancing Stars for this year’s Casino Stars – Dance for Cancer were at the launch event at the Casino RSM Club yesterday, Thursday, March 21.

Ten locals will dance with 10 dance teachers. They get to choose their own songs, costumes, and dance routine.

This year’s Dancing Stars are Sonya Marks, Marika Gava, Erica Trustum, Cindy Richards, Dan Clark, Cohen Parrish, Cody Noll, Sarah Smith, Adam Armistead – and there is a space for one more keen participant.

Each Dancing Star will aim to raise $3000 in sponsorship and donations.

Hayley Hancock and mayor Robert Mustow were dancing stars in the first event in Casino in 2018. Pictured here with Cancer Council organiser Tara Koellner at the Casino RSM Club.

The dance teachers are Sophie Gray, Arabella Barrett, Sarah Bird, Astoria Chapman, Angela Bontea, Keely Maguire, Jess Smith O’Rourke, Kate Dennis, Libby Wyatt and Jess Freeburn Mackney.

Dance for Cancer organiser Tara Koellner said the aim is to raise $60,000 from the Casino event.

The first event in 2018 was a huge success.

There have been three cancellations since then because of covid and the floods, Tara said.

“We’re super-duper excited to be back.”

The dancers and their teachers will learn a three-minute routine and perform on stage at the Casino RSM on June 29.

The judges are Federal MP Kevin Hogan, Leesa Battistuzzi and Mr Mustow.

There will be three awards – Judges Choice, Highest Fundraiser and People’s Choice.

As the dancers practice their routine, IndyNR.com will feature the partners with details on how you can support their fundraising efforts for the Cancer Council.
