Airspace around the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport will be managed by air traffic controllers from 2025 to safely accommodate the continued growth of air traffic in the region.

Currently, the airspace around Ballina Airport is uncontrolled, meaning pilots self-separate from other aircraft using traffic information provided by Airservices Australia.

The change to controlled airspace, where all aircraft movements are directed by air traffic control, follows a direction from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for Airservices to establish controlled airspace for arriving and departing aircraft.

Residents may notice changes to flight paths in their local area once these changes are implemented.

Airservices Australia seeks community feedback on preliminary flight path designs.

Airservices Australia is a Federal Government-owned organisation responsible for the safe and efficient management of 11% of the world’s airspace and the provision of aviation rescue fire fighting services at Australia’s busiest airports.
