Three year old Athena Young was leaning against a window screen on the first floor of a duplex in Casino while waiting for a pizza delivery.

Suddenly, the screen fell and Athena fell with it – onto the concrete driveway below.

Athena was rushed to the Gold Coast Hospital intensive care unit on Saturday, November 4. She has a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and possible spinal injuries.

Her aunt Megan Young cried as she spoke about her niece.

“She’s an adorable little girl who likes to do girlie stuff and she likes teddy bears,” Megan said.

Athena’s father Robert Young is with Athena at the hospital.

Robert works at Booyong Meatworks. His ex-partner (Athena’s mother, Steph Blackburn) rented the duplex in Casino where Athena fell.

Megan believes the screen was never fitted properly.

Megan is focussed on getting help for Robert and Athena.

She has set up an online fundraiser to help with accommodation and fuel and whatever else is needed for Robert to get to and from the hospital.

“It doesn’t rain, it pours,” Megan said of the fateful day Athena fell.

“My brother was driving up to the Gold Coast following the ambulance when he hit something. It took a chunk out of his tyre.”

The Young family grew up in Kyogle and Robert went to Kyogle High School and to Nimbin High School.

Robert is urgently looking for a house to rent close to Booyong where he works and to make it easier to get to the Gold Coast.

Athena is expected to be in hospital for at least two months.

In an instant this little girl’s life changed. If you can help the family financially, donate here.

If you know of a rental near Booyong, contact Megan through the fundraiser page.
