Auditions being held to find the cast of Oliver

A still from Oliver as featured on the BBC.

Could you star in Oliver Twist?

In Grade 4, I played the ragamuffin Oliver in the school play.

“Please Sir, can I have some more?” I remember rehearsing that line over and over.

I don’t remember much more but if you’ve read the book by Charles Dickens, seen the movie, TV miniseries or play, you’ll know this is an ambitious production.

And Village Hall Players is up for it – auditions for the September Broadway musical Oliver Twist are being held this month.

A large cast is needed – there are singing and non-singing roles.

Auditions will be held 10am-3pm on Saturday, February 24 at the Seniors Centre on Bloore St, Kyogle. There is no need to book a time – turn up and give it your best shot.

For the audition you’ll read a script, sing a song (bring a backing track if required) and there will be a basic dance routine given on the day.

The characters to audition for include:

Oliver Twist: orphan, about 11 years of age. Must have an excellent singing voice.

Fagin: an elderly receiver who runs a training academy for young pickpockets.

The Artful Dodger: Fagin’s brightest pupil – an undersized 16 year old.

Nancy: 23 years old, a graduate of Fagin’s academy, and Bill’s doxy.

Bill Sikes: a villain in his prime.

Bet: a 15 year old lass in Fagin’s establishment who idolises Nancy.

Mr Bumble: a large and pompous Beadle of the workhouse

Mrs Corney: a sharp-tongued, domineering widow and the Workhouse Mistress.

Mr Brownlow: an old gentleman of wealth and breading.

Mr Sowerberry: the undertaker.

Mrs Sowerberry: his overseer.

Charlotte: their ‘sluttish’ young daughter.

Noah Claypole: the undertaker’s pimply apprentice.

Mr Grimwig: a doctor.

Mrs Bedwin: The Brownlow’s housekeeper.

Old Sally: a pauper.

Charley Bates: a boy in Fagin’s establishment.

Because of renovations at the KMI Hall, rehearsals will be held at the Kyogle Seniors Centre for February and March on Saturdays.

Performance dates: (check you will be available on theses dates)

Evening performances will be held on September 7, 14 and 21.

Matinee performances will be held on September 8, 15 and 22.

All performances will be at the KMI Hall.
