Dr Katherine Clift has been appointed as the state’s new Independent Biosecurity Commissioner.
One of Ms Clift’s first priorities is to provide advice on the cattle tick program.
State MP Janelle Saffin said the tick program had been running for more than 100 years protecting livestock in northeast NSW up to the Queensland border where the tick is a well-known pest.
“I’ve been working with farmers, veterinarians and farmers organisations to get attention for this program and am very pleased to see it has been flagged as such an important issue for the Commissioner,” Ms Saffin said.
Ms Clift will work with the beef industry, review the present program and make recommendations for improvements to get more effective biosecurity outcomes.
“My career has been grounded in a commitment to working closely with rural and regional communities, industry stakeholders, and across government to build practical, effective, and trusted systems,” Ms Clift said.
“Dr Clift is an internationally respected leader in biosecurity animal welfare and regulatory reform and recently held the role of Commonwealth Inspector-general of Animal Welfare and Live Animal Exports,” Ms Saffin said.
