Woodburn Amateur Boxing Club was issued a notice to vacate the premises by Richmond Valley Council following numerous unsuccessful attempts to renew the tenancy arrangement.
The council acknowledges the importance of a community club continuing at this location and will issue an expression of interest for the future use of the building.
This will provide an opportunity for a rebranded inclusive boxing association, which we understand the community has a strong desire for, the council said.
The club has 35 members with six classes running every week.
Former boxing club president Gavin Begbie had resigned as president and head coach before the council’s announcement.
The club has been involved in some controversy including the club’s logo which was an image with possible links to 15th Century German peasant revolts and the Nazi Party. Read about that here.
IndyNR.com is aware of tensions in the club but residents who contacted us were not willing to go on the record with their complaints.
The current situation provides a possible fresh start for the boxing club.
