When Bruce Birney was a young fella, he went to all the Woodenbong rodeos.

He married when he turned 20 and lived in Woodenbong for 35 years. He lives at Lennox Head now.

He was secretary of the rodeo committee for some time but only rode once.

“I rode a steer,” Bruce said.

“I didn’t do real well. I had a go of it.”

A past rodeo.

Bruce said they lived out of town.

“We’d get up at 3am to muster the bullocks to the rodeo ground.

“It was an exciting time for us young fellas.”

Woodenbong Rodeo is back this weekend after a 23 year hiatus.

Renai Pearce and John O’Reilly have organised the rodeo for tomorrow Saturday, July 19. Gates open at 3pm. Read more here.
