A new op shop will open tomorrow, Wednesday, August 24 in Walker St, Casino.
In a town with six op shops, St Mark’s Anglican Church will have prime spot.
The church has had a few sites for its op shop in the past but none has been suitable, priest Greg Jenks said.
Dr Jenks is the locum priest for the church until the Reverend Sally Miller (nee Light) takes over in three months.
Dr Jenks said he was thrilled to find a retail space as big as the former Nortec office.
“We’re between two chemists,” he said.
The space won’t only be an op-shop. It will have the parish and priest’s offices and there will be a drop-in area where people can have a coffee or tea and a chat.
The service will remain at the church on Sundays, but by having a presence in town, the Walker St location will become a “downtown hub”, he said.
One of the windows of the shop features historical photos of the church and there has already been keen interest in those, Dr Jenks said.
The window will be changed to feature Easter, Naidoc and other significant dates.
Dr Jenks has retired as Dean of Grafton Cathedral in March this year. He spends much of his time writing and has three books with a publisher.
He said he was the “warm-up act” for Ms Miller who is the chaplain at Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina. She will be leaving to take on the role as priest at the St Mark’s in Casino in early October.
Rev Miller and her family live in Casino.
“Her and I are great mates,” Dr Jenks said.
Tomorrow is the grand opening of the St Marks Anglican Church Op-shop in Walker St at 10am.
Opening hours are:
Monday-Friday: 10am-4pm
Saturday: 9am-noon
