Could Kyogle get a street piano?

Councillor Olivia Taylor put forward an idea about a piano on Stratheden Street at the Kyogle Council meeting today, Monday, April 14.

“This is close to my heart,” Ms Taylor said.

“When I was a child, I saw a teenager playing Snake Charmer on the piano.”

Ms Taylor was asked by a resident about the possibility of a street piano in Kyogle.

Uki has two street pianos.

In her submission to the council, Ms Taylor said pianos in public places also called, street pianos were appearing around the country and the world as part of a global movement.

“This movement aims to create opportunities for community interaction and artistic expression, whilst making music accessible to everyone, no matter their background or financial status,” Ms Taylor said.

Street pianos had the potential to transform public spaces into vibrant and engaging areas and have a positive impact on neighbourhoods, she said.

“The decorating of the pianos by local artists and community groups fosters a sense of community ownership and in turn can deter vandalism.”

Councillors and staff discussed the idea and it was decided that the street piano be considered once the masterplan for the CBD, including Stratheden Street was completed.

Councillor Janet Wilson said she came from a generation “where we all learnt the piano.”

“On the face of it, it seems simple, but it should be referred to the masterplan of the CBD.”

Councillor Kieran Somerville said it was a great idea but needed to be strategically planned.

Councillor Brett McNamara said it was all about creating a vibe.

“There may be issues around noise,” he said.

Ms Wilson said there were two pianos in the KMI Hall.

Mayor Danielle Mulholland said she has a piano she could donate.

While everyone liked the idea, it was put on hold for now.

Tickling the ivories on the streets of Kyogle will not be heard – yet.
