Residents lost water for part of the day today, Tuesday, February 3 when there was a water outage in Kyogle.

The exact cause is not known and is being investigated.

Eventually water was restored to the network, Kyogle Council said.

Residents were complaining about dirty, brown water coming out of their taps.

The council said the reservoir levels are slowly rising, and crews flushed fresh, newly-treated water through the system to restore things back to normal.

As the supply comes back online, the council recommends running household taps for a few minutes before using the water, just to clear any residual air and discolouration that can occur after a major outage.

The council has worked with NSW Health and there are no health implications from the water outage.

Kyogle residents are asked to conserve water as much as possible for the remainder of today and into this evening. This will alleviate pressure on the water treatment plant as services return to normal.

The council thanked the community for their patience and understanding.

Kyogle Water Supply (from council’s website)

Kyogle is located in the Richmond River catchment, and the water supply consists of on-stream storage and weir on the Richmond River, raw water pumping station, and water treatment plant originally constructed in the 1930’s. There are three storage reservoirs located at Hill Street, Mount Street, and James Street and the system was recently augmented to include an additional 200Ml of off-stream storage for raw water, upgrade and refurbishment of the water treatment plant, and provision for fish passage over the weir structure.
