Country Crumbs Bakery in Casino made and sold 1000 loaves of bread today, Wednesday, March 5.
Some customers bought 12 loaves, others just one, Sarah said.
At $4.60 a loaf, bakery owner Sarah Mess said they’d be doing it all over again tomorrow.
Country Crumbs Bakery sold out of the day’s baking by 7.30am and had to quickly bake more.
On a usual day, when a cyclone isn’t looming, Sarah said they’d sell about 400 loaves of bread.
The bakers are back at it at 5am in the morning and Sarah is expecting the demand to be even greater than today.
The supermarkets were low on bread today and it is the local bakeries stepping in to meet the demand.
Jo Sudiro from Dave’s Bakehouse in Kyogle said they would be serving bread and milk as long as they could tomorrow as long as there wasn’t a power outage.
Both bakeries open at 5am. Dave’s Bakehouse in Casino will be closed.
Wild Soul Bakehouse is also open tomorrow selling bread, pies and cakes.
With Cyclone Alfred predicted to cross the coast early in the morning on Friday, March 7, a fresh loaf of bread is a reassuring purchase ahead of the wild weather.

Dave’s Bakehouse is at Summerland Way, Kyogle near the Exchange Hotel.
