On Sunday, April 13, Andrew Brownlee was walking his dog in Kyogle along Irwin Street.
Robert James Booth, 56, is accused of attacking him while he was out on his walk. Mr Brownlee died the next day.
ABC reported on the court proceedings in Lismore Local Court today, Tuesday, April 15.
Statements read in court revealed that witnesses saw Mr Booth continue to hit Mr Brownlee around the head and face while he was lying on the road, defending himself with one arm and holding the leash to his dog with the other arm.
It is alleged Mr Booth only stopped hitting Mr Brownlee when neighbours threatened to call police.
The court also heard that as Mr Brownlee turned to walk away, Mr Booth allegedly threw another punch to the back of his head.
ABC reported that the court heard how Mr Brownlee went home with head injuries but refused to go to hospital.
He was later found collapsed on the bathroom floor.
His sons took him to his bedroom where he was found dead the next morning.
Application for bail for Mr Booth was refused.
The matter is back in Lismore Local Court on April 28.
