Cows & Calves top their market at a whopping $4340

Agents yarded a total of 1,509 head at the Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange regular prime sale on Wednesday, April 6.

The yarding of young cattle consisted mainly of vealers, while there was a small penning of yearlings.

Quality was good with several runs of well bred vealer steers and heifers that were suitable for restockers and backgrounders.

All the young cattle went to restockers, that mainly went to southern and western NSW, and there was also a fair number of cattle that were acquired by Queensland buyers.

Cow prices held firm this week averaging 344.5c/kg and reaching a top price of 418.2c/kg. Lighter heifer prices were stronger this week with those up to 250kg averaging 678.5c/kg and topping their category at 820.2c/kg. Heavier heifers over 250kg were easier averaging 461.1c/kg and reaching a top of 696.2c/kg.

Bull prices remained steady with 19 head sold reaching a top of 356.2c/kg and average of 321.4c/kg and 678kg.

Steer prices were slightly dearer with lighter steers up to 250kg averaging 666.6c/kg and top price of 925.2c/kg. Heavier steers over 250kg averaged 566.8c/kg and topped their market at 712.2c/kg. A small number of bullocks sold on the day averaged 398.5c/kg.

Vealer prices held firm to dearer with lighter vealer up to 250kg averaging 702.6c/kg and reaching a top of 880.0c/kg. Heavier vealer over 250kg averaged 574.7c/kg with a top price of 700.2c/kg.

Ian Weir & Son held their first store sale at the redeveloped NRLX site on Thursday, April 7 with 1,259 head sold.

Steers topped their category at 915.2c/kg and averaged 619.9c/kg and 240kg and heifers reached a top of 800.0c/kg and averaged 612.8c/kg and 224kg.

Cows reached a top price of $3,050 whilst Cows & Calves topped their market at $3,500.

George & Fuhrmann held a store sale at the NRLX on Friday, April 8 with 873 head going under the hammer.

Steers topped their category at 932.0c/kg and averaged 693.0c/kg and 249kg whilst heifers reached a top of 844.0c/kg and averaged 664.2c/kg and 214kg.

Cows reached a top price of $2,940 and Cows & Calves topped their market at a whopping $4,340.

The NRLX is closed from Thursday, April 14, re-opening on Tuesday, April 19.
