Casino VRA Rescue Squad region operations manager was only a short distance away and responded along with police, RFS and Fire and Rescue.
When they arrived, the crews had to deal with a confronting crash scene involving several patients including children.
Emergency services worked together to treat the injured until several ambulances arrived.
Bystanders including an off duty Queensland paramedic also helped until enough ambulances arrived.
All five children had minor injuries and were taken to Lismore Base Hospital.
Highway traffic in both directions was affected.
