Deluge of 75mm in half an hour hits village and destroys road

Drake resident Helen Nauschutz couldn’t believe the damage to roads in the village during a fierce downpour at 3.45pm yesterday, November 21.

In half an hour, 75mm of rain destroyed pavements and roads still under repair.

The work crew had been laying pipes and there was a lot of loose gravel, Helen said.

The deluge of rain pelted onto the bitumen creating rivers along roads in Drake.

“This is the second disaster,” Helen said, “we had the hailstorm (on November 10).”

The work crew were at the site within the hour trying to repair the damage done by the heavy rain.

“Locals put up barricades,” Helen said.

According to WeatherZone, nearby town Tabulam received 56mm yesterday.

There were more thunderstorms today and rain is predicted for the rest of the week with the heaviest falls in Drake expected next Tuesday, November 28.
