Elva Jones is the first person to be honoured with a lifetime membership to Kyogle Swimming Pool.
It’s unlikely there is anyone in Kyogle who loves the pool more than Elva.
At 86, she still swims at the pool twice a week. She swam there as a child and has taught lessons to countless children in the learn to swim pool.
Mayor Danielle Mulholland suggested the lifetime membership at the May council meeting and all the councillors voted in favour.
Now Elva will never pay to go swimming at the public pool again.
Councillor Rob Cullen said he was moved by Ms Mulholland’s suggestion.
“Elva has taught generations to swim,” he said.
He suggested the learn to swim pool be named the Elva Jones learn to Swim Pool.
General manager Marcus Schintler said staff would need to research whether a pool can be named after someone who is still alive.
There are public pools named after famous (living) swimmers such as the Mullumbimby Petria Thomas Pool.
