Farmers make most of fine weather to move cattle

Producers took advantage of a few days of fine weather to move cattle, resulting in a larger yarding of 1,675 head at the NRLX in Casino today, Wednesday, May 15.

There was a good supply of cows, however the main increase in numbers was the young cattle. 

There were mainly vealers and weaners and increased numbers of yearlings. 

Quality was mixed with some of the lighter young cattle starting to show the effects of the wet weather, although there was a fair percentage of good quality cattle through the sale.

The market was firm to slightly dearer for well-bred cattle with restocker weaner steers selling from 274c to 400c,to average around 345c to 350c/kg. 

Restocker weaner heifers sold from 228c to 294c/kg. 

There was a good run of yearling steers, most went to backgrounders to be 10c dearer ranging from 250c to 348c and the yearling heifers sold to a top of 298c/kg.

The yarding of export cattle consisted of a few pens of grown steers and heifers, while there was a good penning of cows. 

Grown steers sold from 258c to 278c to be 10c dearer, while grown heifers reached a top price of 270c/kg. 

The cow market was 10c to 15c dearer with 2 score cows selling from 188c to 215c while 3 scores averaged 213c and 4 scores sold from 228c to 248c/kg.
