Fire season starts, permits required for burning

Fire season starts today, Sunday, September 1 for the Kyogle, Lismore and Richmond Valley LGAs.

This means fire permits are required for burning.

Neighbours and the RFS must be notified at least 24 hours ahead of burning.

If you live in a rural land-sharing community, you need to notify adjoining landowners, not just those in your residential community.

If you live in town or village you may also need a permit from the council as they are responsible for looking after the Clean Air Act – you should check with your local Council.

You can check out the NSW Rural Fire Service website for tips on preparing your property and getting a permit.

Check the site before you light to make sure you’re able to light – permits are automatically suspended on days of High, Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger (except for pre-harvest cane burns).
