Food of many cultures at bush school fun day

Bundgeam Preschool at Terrace Creek celebrates 40 years on Sunday, October 2.

Everyone is invited to a Family Fun Day at the preschool which is halfway between Kyogle and Woodenbong.

The not for profit community preschool is in the former Bundgeam School building built in 1912. The school closed in 1978 and reopened as a preschool in 1982.

The preschool looks very different today.

Director Susan Jenner said when the preschool started there was no electricity, no toilet – just the basic building that still stands today.

“Through years of community effort and involvement we have flourished to be the beautiful little establishment we are today,” she said.

Ms Jenner loves that the preschool is nature and play based.

“The children’s enjoyment is the biggest reason I keep going,” she said.

“We go on walks to the creeks and see animals.

“That’s what I loved doing in my own childhood.”

To celebrate 40 years, there is a Family Fun Day at the preschool at 35 Terrace Rd Terrace Creek on Sunday, October 2 at 10 am–2pm.

Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary staff will be there with snakes and other animals.

Kyogle Rural Youth will bring baby animals.

Fitness Kidz and Kyogle Car Club will be there and DIRT actors will perform poetry.

As for food – there will be plenty to eat with sausage and steak sandwiches, dumplings, bean nachos, Vietnamese rolls and cakes and ice cream.

Ms Jenner is also celebrating $290,000 government funding to increase the size of the preschool. This will give the preschool the capacity for 35 children.

With government subsidies, children aged 3-5 years are fee-free and younger children can attend for $30 a day.

The preschool operates three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The school recently installed a bike track, vegie gardens and solar panels.
