Stan Munro, known to many Kyogle residents as Dame Stan, is in the outback with Kevin Markwell presenting the show Vintage Drag in Mint Condition.
The show is part of Katherine Pride in the Northern Territory and was performed last Friday night, June 14.
“When Kevin and I first put the show on at the KMI Hall in 2022, with the help of Lynette Zito, as producer and director, I had no idea that we would take the show on tour to Castlemaine, Newcastle, Sydney and now Katherine,” Stan said.
The show benefitted from Flood Recovery Funding provided by the State Government through a small grant by Kyogle Council. It made its debut as The Dame in November 2022.
Stan and Kevin shared the show of Stan’s life through words and images and a couple of songs.
A new segment Drag Queen Wants a Husband got lots of laughs as two local men and a drag king vied for the honour of being Stan’s husband.
“I think it’s wonderful that a new piece of theatre, which originated here in Kyogle, has resonated so well with audiences outside the region, including a performance during the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival,” Kevin said.
Vintage Drag opens a window into Stan’s life and a career that spans 60 years.
After years in Les Girls in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as gigs in Hong Kong and Beirut of all places, Stan went on to become Australia’s leading drag comedian, and performed in every state and territory in Australia.
There are few Australian entertainers, of any genre, who can claim a career stretching across six decades, Kevin said.
Vintage Drag in Mint Condition will be presented for the very last time in Kyogle on Saturday, June 29 at 7pm at the Kyogle Golf Club. Tickets are $20 and are available through Clay Corner or online.
Book in through the Golf Club for a meal before the show starts.
