Going Inky to bring a print-your-own-newspaper to readers

Local news on your phone, tablet, computer and now a print-your-own newspaper every fortnight.

Susanna Freymark

Every week people come up to me – in the supermarket, the street or at the farmers market – to tell me they miss holding a newspaper in their hands.

I miss it too.

Local news keeps us connected. Online or on paper.

Here at IndyNR.com we want to try something different – kind of a social experiment – to offer a way for readers to print their own local newspaper.

It’s called the Inky – and it’s the inked version of the Indy.

It’s a way to hold a printed newspaper in your hands. It will take a small effort from you.

The first Richmond Valley Inky is out on March 12.

The print your own newspaper will be available on indynr.com every Wednesday – one week Richmond Valley Inky is published and the next week Kyogle Inky is.

Select the newspaper and hit print. If you don’t have a printer at home and want it in colour, go to the library in Casino, Evans Head or Kyogle or go to a print shop and get it printed there. You will have to pay for the printing.

There will be copies to read at the library too.

Ask your favourite cafe to print out a copy for customers to read.

Inky will be available for free and any reader can print it at their expense. Or go to the library or a cafe to read it.

As I said, it’s a social experiment. I have no expectations of how it will go but I’ll enjoy laying it out and presenting it to you. After that, I will see what life the Inky has.

I’m hoping the 8-page newspaper will find its way into your hands. The content is mainly news from the indynr.com website with some interesting extras in print. Hence the tagline – the Inky version of the Indy.

Kyogle gets Inky on March 19.

The first issue of Richmond Valley Inky is out March 12.

Kyogle Inky is out March 19.

And then every alternate Wednesday for each issue after that.

Go to this button, pictured below, at the top of the indynr.com website from March 12.

You’ll see a printable PDF and simply have to hit print – and then find a spot to sit and read the newspaper.

I’m working on making the Inky special, and different from the news website.

Your feedback on this is always welcome. Email indynr.com@gmail.com

Here comes the Inky adventure – let’s see what happens.

The Inky will be printed and available to read at Casino, Evans Head and Kyogle libraries. Sensational Crafts at 125 Braker Street will also have a copy to read. You can print your own at Sensational Crafts on A3 paper.

Any cafes or business outlets that print a copy, let us know and we’ll give you a shout out.

Print your own local newspaper.

The Inky Project is supported by a Regional Media Fund grant from the NSW Government.
