Artist Holly Ormsby, 23, entered her first art competition and she won People’s Choice.
Her painting Out of This World was featured in the Cassino Gallery UN-Real exhibition where it was voted most popular by visitors to the gallery.
Holly was at work at The Lunatic Hotel when she was informed about her win.
After the phone call, she told everyone in the pub and they cheered, she said.
“It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” Holly said about painting.
The Out of the World piece took about two years to complete with gaps in between painting.
“I had a big canvas. I slowly started filling things in, then added more. I added a city, a spaceship.”
Holly comes from Sydney and moved to Drake four years ago.
She likes the close knit community there. Her ambition is to be a fulltime artist.
“Social media is the go for me to test what people think about my work,” she said.
Her advice to other young artists is to “just do it”.
“Try your hardest.
“I’m up till late at night painting. Work as hard as you can.”
The next step is to build an art studio. To help Holly do that, the Lunatic is running a raffle. For only $2 a ticket, you could win Cranes in Bloom. The runner-up prizes include prints by Holly. Buy tickets at the pub.
Holly used acrylics to paint Out of This World but she is keen to diversify and will be submitting an artwork in the Cassino Gallery’s upcoming watercolour exhibition.
The gallery is also running a calligraphy exhibition and classes. The official opening is on Saturday, August 10 at 4pm–6pm. $10 entry, including a drink and nibbles. Head to the gallery’s Facebook page for more info.
