A development application to convert the former Bi-Rite shop on Summerland Way into a laundromat is on public exhibition until 5pm tomorrow, Monday June 22.
The DA proposes to change the use of the long vacant premises at 42–46 Summerland Way from a retail outlet to a coin and card-operated laundromat, with MP and A Smith named as applicants on the DA.
The building previously housed a Bi-Rite white goods and electronics store, which included a Jaycar section, and it has stood empty since the business closed.
The DA includes self-service washing and drying machines, a staffed wash, dry and fold service during business hours, and the retail of laundry products and accessories. Proposed trading hours are 6am–midnight Monday to Saturday, and 7am–10pm on Sundays and public holidays.
The path to the DA has not been straightforward.
Operator David Scarrabelotti installed coin and card-operated washing machines, dryers and customer seating without first obtaining council approval, incorrectly believing the change of use did not require formal consent.
Kyogle Council identified the unauthorised use and issued a formal Intention Notice in February, followed by a Development Control Order on March 11. Scarrabelotti complied with the order and instructed building designers RD Hanby to prepare and submit the DA.
The application acknowledges the proposed use will place greater demand on Kyogle’s water supply and sewage infrastructure than the former retail tenancy.
Noise from the machines – particularly dryers during spin cycles – is addressed in the application, which proposes anti-vibration installation, fixed closed windows in the machine area, an automatic sliding entry door, and signage asking customers to enter and exit quietly out of consideration for neighbours.
