Casino’s Sophie Hastie said it “feels incredible” to have won the School-based Trainee of the Year at the North Coast and Mid-North Coast 2022 NSW Training Awards held in Coffs Harbour last night, Friday, July 1.

Sophie is a student at St Mary’s College Casino and she is doing a Certificate II in Business through NSW TAFE.

Her traineeship was at Casino Library.

“Since I started my school-based apprentice/trainee journey at the end of 2020, I have been surrounded by such a supportive team of people at the Richmond Valley Council and more specifically at the Richmond-Upper Clarence Regional Libraries,” Sophie said.

“Without the team, I couldn’t have gained all the fundamental interpersonal skills that I need for my goal career path.”

Sophie said she has made so many genuine connections with people in the community throughout her traineeship at the library.

“I have had those people in my mind through this entire awards process,” she said.

Sophie was also instrumental in the delivery of the Tech Savvy program for the community while also completing her senior studies at school.

What does the future look like for Sophie?

“I definitely have a few different pathways that I’m looking into such as working in public libraries or school libraries or working as a primary or high school teacher. You’ll see that the common theme with all of those different careers is that they all involve a lot of human interaction which I absolutely adore.”
