Lismore candidate: Get to know Adam Guise, Greens

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the mid north coast around Macksville and Kempsey where I learned to surf and ride horses at Dad’s. I moved to Lismore in 1999 to study arts, law, politics and education at university. I stayed there because I wanted to be in a regional area with a sense of community.

What was your childhood like?

My childhood was idyllic, being home-schooled in my early years by my parents before attending a small local primary school later. I spent lots of time in nature and on Dad’s farm which inspired my love for the natural world.

Any standout memories?

A week-long horse ride from Dad’s to Kempsey in winter, sleeping out in the freezing cold and crossing the Macleay river in flow.

What careers/work have you had?

I have arts, law and education (secondary) degrees. I have worked at Trinity Catholic College in various school support roles. I have been a Lock the Gate regional coordinator during the coal seam gas campaign. I have worked as a policy adviser in State Parliament. I’ve most recently worked as a health promotion officer for NSW Health. I’m currently a Councillor on Lismore City Council.

What is your life like now?

Life is of course busy with an election campaign, family and council commitments. I am grateful to live in such a vibrant, inspiring and creative community that cares about our future.

How do you relax/unwind?

I love to go bush and get into nature. Whether that’s going for a multi-day hike or planting trees and regenerating creek lines, connecting to the earth and the simple things in life is grounding and life-affirming.

Why did you go into politics? Is this your first time running?

I joined the Greens and became politically active the same time as I got involved in the Gasfield Free campaign. I ran for state in 2015 and nearly won, which resulted in gas licences being cancelled.

What are the three most important values to you?

Fairness to ensure that people have equal opportunities in life.

Compassion for people and the planet.

Protection of our environment and climate which are essential to life on earth.

You have the power to change one thing in Australia – what would you choose?

End coal and gas. Regenerate our amazing landscape to bring back the big forests pre-European invasion.
