Lismore candidate: Get to know Janelle Saffin, Labor

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Ipswich, leaving when I was 20. Lismore soon became home. My mum and stepdad live in Ipswich. Mum is 91, sharp with a few frailties. Dad has passed on.

What was your childhood like?

My childhood was in the Housing Commission neighbourhood where we looked out for each other. In our family life, there was lots of drink and domestic violence. I missed out on education but never lost the thirst for learning, and later on became qualified in education and law.

Any standout memories?

I was the clever kid in class (and yes, quite bossy) and before I went to school could spell.

What careers/work have you had?

Workwise, I have done it all; abattoirs, foundries, factories, hairdresser, checkout chick, barmaid, shoe shop assistant, refuges, clubs, social development organisations, teaching, lawyering, UN work, parliament and more.

What is your life like now?

Life is full – challenging and rewarding. I remind myself daily that I am lucky to be able to do what I do.

Why did you go into politics? Is this your first time running?

Public life for me is about preserving what is good and changing the world where needed, starting in our own backyard.

I want all children to be treated with the kindness and the care they deserve, no poverty.

I am always running. I have served in three parliaments and have plenty left to give.

What are the three most important values to you?

Kindness, integrity and honesty are the three primary values that guide me well.

I have boundless energy and am committed to supporting our communities to get the services they need.

Anything else you think is important for people to know about you.

My experience, knowledge, skills, networks and attitude equip me well to continue to represent the people of the Lismore electorate.
