Man charged for assault, police allege he hit and spat at officers

Police responded to a triple zero call at a home in Richmond Street, Woodburn at 9.15pm on Friday, July 5.

When they arrived, police spoke to a woman at the house. A man, 23, at the house became irate with the police and the woman and began to yell at them.

The man’s actions continued to escalate and eventually police tried to detain him.

The man clenched his fists and police allege he swung at the officers as they approached him.

During the physical confrontation between police and the man, it is alleged that one of the officers was struck to the left side of the face by the man resulting in a deep cut which caused swelling to the officer’s face.

Police then used capsicum spray and attempted to restrain the man.

Even when restrained, the man allegedly spat in the face of an officer and stomped on the foot of another officer.

The man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital where he was left in the care of hospital staff for assessment.

When the man was released from hospital, he was arrested by police and charged with assaulting police officers and causing actual bodily harm on two counts.

The man was granted bail and will face court Ballina Local Court on July 25.

The information for this report was provided by Richmond Police.
