Mayor ‘shocked silly’ to be on Aus Day Honours List

At 10pm last night, before the sun rose on a hot Australia Day, Danielle Mulholland was searching the Honours List to see if anyone in Kyogle LGA was named on it.

To her surprise, there was her name under the awards for a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division.

Three years ago, she was asked about her contributions, but she never heard anything after that until now.

The OAM is for her service to local government, and to the community of Kyogle.

“I am deeply honoured and truly humbled to receive this award – though if I am being honest, ‘shocked silly’ might be the more accurate description,” Ms Mulholland said.

“To receive this honour on the 50th anniversary of the awards is very special and I thank all of those who have lifted me up during my journey in service to Kyogle and the villages.”

Ms Mulholland was at the Kyogle and then Bonalbo Australia Day ceremonies.

“Any contribution I have made has always been part of a shared effort,” she said.

“I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary volunteers, community leaders, and organisations who give their time, skills, and compassion to support those in need. Their dedication continues to inspire me, and this honour belongs just as much to them.

Ms Mulholland has been mayor of Kyogle for many years – in 2013–2021 and was elected again in 2024.

“It has been a privilege to serve the people who live in the Kyogle Council area,” she said.

“We have a very diverse demographic, so that can be a bit tricky to manage when there are contentious issues arising but at the end of the day, we all work towards bettering our communities.”
