We’ve asked all Richmond Valley Council candidates to provide a 200-word introduction about why they are running in the election. All election related stories about Richmond Valley can be found in one place here.

Because there are 23 candidates in Richmond Valley we will be presenting them in their group tickets – A, B, C and D and one ungrouped individual.

You can choose to vote for a group (above the line) on your ballot paper or you can vote for individuals by numbering them (below the line).

Here is Group A on your ballot paper promoting A Time for Change.

John Walker

Lives: Casino

John has been a successful executive in local government and the private sector, doing difficult jobs that require hard decisions. He has a reputation for leading from the front, getting things done, and delivering what he promises.

John was CEO at five Councils and a Councillor at another. He is a former General Manager at RVC where he introduced improvements to its finances, amenities and services. At Lismore Council he was involved in flood recovery, working with Governments for funding.

He has held roles in the private sector as MD of Thrifty Car Rental and as General Manager Retail for Westpac.

John is keen to serve as mayor and as leader of a talented team of independent voices because he believes change is necessary. He believes the council has become disconnected from the community with a lack of transparency and openness. He will open all meetings and allow questions and public access on any subject.

John wants an independent review of the Casino Saleyards fiasco which caused significant pain to businesses and individuals. His view is the council mishandled the process and got the result wrong by refusing to mediate. The review will help better decision-making.

He is also concerned about the significant pain point being experienced by people wanting to invest, develop or build in our community.

Stuart George

Age: 52

Lives: Casino

Born and bred in Casino, I have lived in the area for 95 % of my life with strong family and community ties in Richmond Valley.

Reason for standing: I want to see unity between RVC and the community/ratepayers, especially after the saleyards and the unsettling divisiveness it caused. We need to unify the community again and get back to where the RVC was the envy of the Northern Rivers communities.

Bridge the disconnect and dismantle the perception of arrogance.

I want to see tourism and events become a thriving cog not only for Casino but for the whole of the RVC council area. We have an F111 displayed in Evans Head in a wonderful museum but this needs to be at the forefront of Evans Head tourism to create visitors and dollars to our communities.

I have a strong belief in community service and have been taught this from an early age by my parents.

I’m a Beef Week Life Member, Past President (2008–2019), past RVC deputy mayor, councillors and Rous Water councillor (2008–2012), NSW Premiers Award for Community Service 2020, president Casino RSM seniors rugby league football club (2012–2016), Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League director (2016–2022), Westpac Rescue Helicopter advisory board (2017–current ), current director Casino Golf Club.

Kylie O’Reilly

Age: 48 years

Lives: Doonbah

Job: commercial mushroom farmer

I’m running for Richmond Valley Council with a dedicated team that supports my role while addressing other key areas. My primary goal is to be a strong advocate for the lower river areas, including vital infrastructure, ensuring these communities receive the attention and resources they need.

Voice for Lower River Areas: I will prioritise targeted infrastructure improvements and tailored support programs for the lower river areas, including critical upgrades to Woodburn/Evans Head Road to enhance connectivity and safety.

Transparency & Accountability: I will advocate for clear communication and open decision making within the council, ensuring all actions are transparent and accountable to the community.

Support for Farmers & Horticulturists: I will work for better infrastructure, and enhanced access to resources to strengthen our vital agricultural sector.

Early Childhood Programs: I will champion initiatives to improve early childhood education and childcare accessibility, providing safe and nurturing environments for our youngest residents.

Support for Small Businesses: I will promote policies that reduce red tape, offer incentives, and support local entrepreneurship to foster a thriving economic environment.

Affiliation with Group A: Representing Group A, I am committed to independence and transparency. Your vote supports focused advocacy and meaningful progress.

Job: company secretary at Casino Food Co-op and dairy farmer

I’m running for council to bring fresh perspectives and new energy to our council.

Having been raised on a beef property and now running our family dairy farm business, I understand the unique challenges we face. I’ll be a strong voice for our rural communities and ensure that facilities and services reach all parts of our local council area, not just the more populated areas.

I am company secretary at Casino Food Co-op, (Casino meatworks) and have an extensive background in corporate governance at an executive level. I have been actively involved in the community, having previously held the positions of secretary – Casino Cougars Junior Rugby League and board member of Jumbunna Early Intervention Preschool and as a committee member of the Casino Tennis Club. I understand the value of grassroots engagement and being a part of local organisations.

I’m also passionate about creating an environment where businesses can thrive.  I’m keen on policies that attract investment, support local businesses, and create jobs that will boost our region’s economy and ensure its sustainability and growth.

I am hardworking and deeply passionate about all of Richmond Valley Council. My experience in management and community involvement has equipped me with the skills and aptitude necessary to serve effectively as a councillor and support the community.
