Whether you’re a keen photographer trying to capture the action in the night sky or an amateur astronomer and stargazer – it will be the meteor showers you’ll be searching for.
Tonight, Sunday, October 20 and into the morning, is the best time to see the Orionid meteor shower as it reaches its peak in the pre-dawn hours tomorrow, Monday, October 21.
The major problem is the moon making it difficult to see the display of shooting stars.
For several nights Paul Stanley-Jones has been at Ballina trying to get a decent photo of the meteor shower.

“The full ‘Hunter’ moon is ruining my comet pics,” he said.
Paul uses an app to give him the rough location of the comets.
“Then I start taking multiple shots to try and locate it.
“It’s tricky at first, but once I find it, I can then concentrate on getting the right camera settings and trying to get the best frame.”

The Orionid meteor shower normally lasts from about October 16–26.
“It’s getting fainter by the day,” Paul said.
Give it a go from midnight until dawn – moon glare will be an issue but Paul has still managed to get some fantastic photos.
