Lyndall Murray said hundreds of locals in tinnies were first to respond to the floods and calls for help.
“Many risked their lives under the cloak of darkness in rapid floodwaters to save others,” Lyndall said
“Legends in tinnies in dangerous waters, then worked the night pulling others out of boats onto the Woodburn Bridge where they camped the night in cold wet conditions, with many other Woodburn locals, their pets, and even seven horses. There are many more stories just like this one.”
Lyndall said there were many stories of tragedy.
“You can still smell it in the air here. But what lights me up is the stories of comradery, lifelong friendships formed as the civilian-funded rapid response, saved lives, and animals,” she said.
“It truly was a human army of everyday people helping each other.”
