New signpost for four generations of Burtons living on Burton Road

Meet the Burtons: John Burton, Wayne Burton, Fraser Burton holding Myles Burton.

Four generations of Burtons live at the family farm at Mongogarie.

The youngest Burton is two years old.

The farm’s driveway comes off Mongogarie Road and a year ago, Richmond Valley Council sent a letter wanting suggestions as to what to name the driveway/road, Lisa Burton said.

The new road had to be named after someone that had died. This is a requirement for all new names of streets and roads.

“My husband’s family has lived here for 59 years,” Lisa said.

“My mother-in-law, Yvonne Burton, passed away seven years ago so we decided that Burton Road might be a nice gesture.”

Yvonne (married to John Burton) was a hard-working farmer’s wife and mother.

“It’s very fitting that the road is in honour of her,” Lisa said.

Yvonne grew up in Rappville as part of the Cole family.

Lisa’s husband Wayne and his three sisters, Joanne, Lynn and Michelle all went to Leeville Public School.

Yvonne was an active member of Leeville School P&C as a young mother, raising four children while milking the cows until 1974.

With the road signpost now installed, Yvonne’s memories live on with the Burtons living on Burton Road.
