Not Quite White in the Head — radio presenter to interview her fav author at festival

Kevin Markwell

When ABC North Coast Radio presenter Bridie Tanner appears In Conversation with award winning Bundjalung author Melissa Lucashenko at Kyogle’s Literary Allsorts in May she will be talking to her favourite author.

Bridie has interviewed countless local authors on air and for the past three years has hosted conversations on the main stage at Byron Writers Festival.

This will be her first time at the Kyogle Literary Allsorts event.

Bridie will be talking with Melissa about her latest book, a work of nonfiction,

Not Quite White in the Head.

The book is a collection of essays and journalism spanning two decades.

It includes Melissa’s reflections on being caught in what was believed to be a siege by an armed gunman (at Southern Cross University in 2019), on the marginalised lives of prisoners and the urban poor, on Blak identity, Australian literature and on meeting her writing idol, Maori author Keri Hulme. There’s a lot to talk about.

Melissa is a Kyogle festival favourite, having been involved in the very first Kyogle Writers Festival in 2021 and appearing in several others since then.

Last year she flipped roles and was the conversant with Melbourne/Narm-based poet Nam Le.

Melissa received the Walkley Award in Journalism in 2013 for her piece, Sinking Below Sight: Down and Out in Brisbane and Logan and was awarded the Miles Franklin Award for her novel Too Much Lip.

Her seventh novel Edenglassie waspublished in 2023 and won her the Queensland Premier’s Award and the VictorianPremier’s Literary Award.

Kyogle’s Literary Allsorts takes to the stage on Friday, May 15 (Roxy Art Gallery) and Saturday, May 16 (KMI Hall).
