Today was Vietnam Veterans Day.

A commemorative service honoured those who served in the Vietnam War.

It was held at the Casino RSM Club today, Thursday, August 18.

Richmond Valley mayor Robert Mustow said he was honoured to lay a wreath on behalf of the community and Richmond Valley Council.

Darryl Clifford received an award in recognition of his 50 years of service as a member of the Returned Services League Australia.

This year is the 60th anniversary of Australia becoming involved in the conflict.

State MP Janelle Saffin said the day commemorates the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War.

“Also known as Vietnam Veterans Day, we honour those who fought and fell during that fierce battle in a rubber plantation 56 years ago,” Ms Saffin said.

Almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972.

Of those Diggers, 521 died and more than 3000 were wounded and many others suffered in other ways.
