Police arrest man they allege was armed with a machete when he assaulted a woman

Police allege that on Sunday, January 9,  a 36-year-old man entered a residence while armed with a machete and assaulted a 38-year-old woman that he was previously in a relationship with.

The man later fled and avoided police.

On Wednesday, January 26, police gained entry to unit the man had been living in.

Police will allege they located a pistol and other items within the unit. The man, who had been in an upstairs unit in the same apartment block, fled the location.

About 8.50am today, Friday, February 11, Richmond Police District officers assisted by officers from the Dog Unit and PolAir, conducted an operation to arrest the man.

The man was found hiding in a cupboard in a motel room on Hare Street in Casino. He allegedly tried to push past officers but was subdued and arrested without further incident.

He was taken to Lismore Police Station where he was charged with three outstanding warrants for driving, assault, domestic violence, property and firearms offences.

The Lismore man was refused bail and appeared in Lismore Local Court on Friday, February 11 and will next appear in the same court on Monday, February 28.
