A pop-up film school for home schoolers aged 10–17 years from west of the range will run for nine weeks. The course ends with a screening of the students’ work at Kyogle Cinema.
Kyogle Together has enlisted experienced documentary shooter-producer Jord Edmeades to run the free film course at Mallanganee Memorial Hall, Mallanganee.
The course starts on Thursday, May 8. Interested students can email outreach@kyogletogether.org.au
The course will cover using a camera, microphones and sound recording, doco styles, shooting an interview, editing, voiceovers, and the final cut.
The finished films will screen at Kyogle Cinema on July 3–4.
Course facilitator Jord has just finished his first feature-length documentary film –Spreading Like Wildfire, a film that explores the Australian bushfire recovery effort after one of the nation’s most devastating fire seasons.
“I have a background as a youth worker having worked in schools and taught privately for most of my career, mostly as a one-on-one creative mentor,” Jord said.
“I do not over plan my lessons as I prefer them to be conversational and in-the-moment, responding to questions and addressing each individual students queries as the content unfolds. I trust that when one student learns something valuable in class, the rest will learn it too.”
Jord teaches with passion, fun, humour and commitment and encourages all students to be attentive, interested, and committed in class.
“How each student decides to approach their doco project will be up to them, and from past experience teaching these courses, most parents will be uniquely involved as supporters, chaperones and maybe even interview subjects,” Jord said.
Jord said the course can be done with just a smartphone or tablet. Students will be encouraged bring their camera and sound recording gear to every class so they can familiarise themselves more and more every week and we can get hands-on with their specific gear as the course unfolds.
He has more than 10 years of experience in the industry, he’s worked for BBC Studios, Fremantle Media, Warner Brothers International, Matchbox Pictures, Joined Up Films, Triptych Pictures, and ABC International Development.
