The Casino Rural Fire Brigade crew was called to a grass fire at Runnymede Road, Kyogle at about 2pm today, Monday, August 26.
They found a landowner had lost control of their fire, and the fire was heading for multiple properties.
The Casino crew did property protection on the western edge.
Because of the recent rainfall, the paddocks were soft, which made getting RFS appliances across the ground difficult.
“We used backpack blowers, which allowed us to stop the spread, protecting property and landowner’s stock feed.,” the Casino crew said.
Also in attendance were Kyogle Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade, Green Pigeon, Wyneden, Toonumbar, Casino East – Greenridge/Tatham and North Casino – Fairy Hill RFS crews.
So far, 28 hectares has burned at Runnymede Road.
Fire crews ask landowners to look closely at the weather conditions before burning. They should also decide if they have the appropriate equipment to conduct any burning because escaped burns can mean fines, jail time, and the costs for damages, the RFS said.
Casino East RFS warns residents about cane harvest burns happening this week.

“All of these cane harvest burns will be visible from Casino township, as well as the Greenridge, Tatham, Yorklea, Shannonbrook, and Tomki locations.”
