River rush of skis on the Richmond

The Richmond River Rush at Woodburn this weekend, January 28–29, was a rush for those on the water.

With perfect conditions for skiing, Water Ski Racing Queensland hosted the event on the Richmond River.

Organiser Stewart Smith said it was the first time they had skiers and powerboats racing at the same event.

“Woodburn is a fabulous location,” Stewart said.

“The river is unique and has some great straights.”

With 170 entries over the weekend, there was some long distance racing all the way to Rileys Hill.

People came from Lennox Head, Byron Bay, Grafton, Coraki and the Gold Coast, Stewart said.

Stewart said he was aware of the impact of the floods on the small river town of Woodburn and had urged participants to buy local.

Even though there isn’t a fuel station or a supermarket, we wanted to support Woodburn businesses, he said.

The event hadn’t been held at Woodburn for about 10 years, Stewart said.

He plans to be back with another skiing and racing event within the next six months.
