Amie Browning organised the first Out of the Shadows Walk in Casino last year to honour World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, September 10.
She’s doing it again this year to acknowledge the more than 3000 Australians who die from suicide every year – that’s nine people a day.
Everyone is welcome to join the Out of the Shadows Walk at Albert Park Cricket Oval, Bruxner Highway Casino starting at 7am this Sunday, September 8 (the closest Sunday to World Suicide Prevention Day.
You can walk to remember a loved one, as a personal tribute for a friend or family member, or to show your support for Australians experiencing emotional distress or mental illness, Amiee said.
“Together, we will ensure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.”
Lifeline Northern NSW encourages people to walk 9km and raise funds for the charity. Details on how to do that are here.
Lifeline hosts the walk in Casino and another in Ballina.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15–44.
World Suicide Prevention Day intends to reduce the stigma around the topic and encourage conversation about it in a way that helps those facing crisis to feel more comfortable reaching out
Lifeline also encourages people to ‘reach in’, by asking people if they are ok and being alongside them as they answer.
More details on the walks can be found here.
