Kyogle Whiddon resident Betty Phelps has been busy with her crochet hook creating dozens of tiny hats with the hope they might one day bring warmth and comfort to those in need.
When Kyogle CWA heard about Betty’s heartfelt project, they saw how these little hats could make a big impact.
The CWA has been assembling care packages for parents of premature babies for some time, and Betty’s hats are a perfect addition to their gift bags.
Odette Nettleton from the CWA joined Betty for lunch to talk about using the little hats.
Betty enjoys life at Whiddon, often lifting spirits with her rendition of Irving King’s 1925 classic Show Me the Way to Go Home. True to the original but with her signature touch, Betty never forgets to add a comic hiccup at the end—a moment she insists is essential for full effect.
Betty was beaming with pride knowing her little hats would be warming the heads of newborns.
As Odette and Betty’s meeting drew to a close, Betty sang Vera Lynn’s wartime classic, We’ll Meet Again.
There may have been tears in Odette’s eyes.
Two local legends, one unforgettable afternoon, and a heartfelt gift that will bring comfort to many.
