Bart Green has a farm in Mudgee with Black Angus cattle and White Suffolk sheep. Bart and his family live in Alstonville.
Six days ago, Bart opened MGF butchers in South Casino, (the initals come from the names of his sons).
What is a man from Alstonville doing selling meat from Mudgee in Casino? – A town known for its beef.
“This is where we landed,” Bart said.
“We sell our meat online. And we process it at a butcher shop in Alstonville (we needed our own facility).”
Bart, his wife Simone and his children Morris, George and Frank, aged 10, 7 and five are all involved in the business at Alstonville.
“We’re good at lamb,” he said.
“We’ve got beef but we cut our teeth on sheep,” he said.
They crossbreed White Suffolk ewes with Merinos in Mudgee.
Despite bringing in meat from Mudgee, Bart doesn’t see it detracting what is on offer in Casino.
“It’s not about taking business from other butchers here,” he said.
“We know they do a good job.”
Alex Bertuch, 18, from Goonellabah is the butcher working at MGF Meats.
“I started at 14, I walked into a butcher shop and asked if they needed a wash-up kid,” Alex said.
That was on the Gold Coast.
“I found a love for it,” he said.
He lives in Goonellabah and travels to South Casino early in the morning.
Alex recommended the Porterhouse steak at $36.99 a kilo.
