Quilts but not as you know them. Kyogle Quilters Group has an exhibition at the Roxy Gallery in Kyogle that is full of colour, intricate stitching, imagination and a few surprises.
Everything you thought you knew about quilting will be upturned at the Quilts – we’ve got you covered exhibition running until October 13.
Kyogle Quilters Group president Sharyn Duncan said the group started meeting at Eden Creek Hall eight years ago.
“We exchange ideas on quilting, on life – it’s very social with a cup of tea and a biccie,” she said.
Quilter Jenny Anderson said her quilt titled The Sewing Room displays the elements of the group.
Jenny likes colours.
“The brighter, the better,” she said.
Her quilt Curvalicious is brimming with colours and curves.
It took her six days of work to make the quilt.
“I don’t have a style, I like to experiment.”
The Curvalicious quilt will go to her daughter.
“She loved the colour,” she said.
Jenny sources material “from all over the place”.
With Casino and Kyogle no longer having material shops, Jenny goes to the Gold Coast for material.
Her latest project is making quillows for her granddaughter.
“Quillows are quilts that fold into a pillow,” Jenny said.
Lyn Costin likes colour too.
She uses it in many of her quilts including the one for her husband called JC’s Ute.
Her Snakes and Ladders quilt is made with fabric from her stash, she said.
“I’ve been collecting fabric for 30 years.”
She’ll give the colourful quilt away or it will be a throw rug, she said.
What is it Lyn likes about quilting?
“I love the tactile side of it,” she said.
“I enjoy the challenge of something new.
Pat Oxtoby is adventurous with her quilting.
Her Escher-inspired quilt is a 3D illusion that “goes nowhere.”
“My husband said he wanted an Escher quilt,” she said.
Pat finds quilting relaxing.
“There’s lots of planning and slow stitching,” she said.
One of her larger quilts uses the cyanotype process using light and leaves.
The large piece took her about 50 hours to complete.
She uses a design wall in her studio to plan out the layout of a quilt.
The cyanotype quilt will go on one of her beds when the exhibition finishes.
Pat also belongs to a quilting group in Goonellabah and a group quilting project of eight pieces won first prize for a collaborative quilt at the Sydney Quilt Show this month.
The group meets at Eden Creek Hall on the third Saturday of each month and the first Thursday. Members come from Lismore, Woodenbong, Lennox Head and Kyogle.
