Brett Stuart is keen for me try the ham in his butcher shop.

He presents three thin slices – so thin they are almost see-through.

Try it, he says.

As I chew, the smoky flavour of the ham comes through.

Have another slice, Brett says.

Stuart Brothers Butcher is a family owned business that’s been going for 65 years,

They know about hams.

An on-the bone ham is $15.99/kg.

“It’s a proper ham made from local pork from Casino,” Brett says.

“There’s no comparison in flavour.

“They sell themselves – they walk out the door.”

I can see why Brett gave me some ham to taste.

“Supermarket hams are cheaper but don’t have the flavour of a ham from the butchers.”

Coles is selling hams from $13/kg and Woolworths went as low as $8/kg for a leg ham.

Many supermarkets freeze their hams, ours are fresh, Brett says.

Fresh and flavoursome – the supermarkets may win on price but for taste head to your local butcher.

Call Brett on 6632 1020 and see if he has any hams left.

Kyogle Quality Meat have locally sourced hams too that are smoked the old fashioned way for $16.99/kg.

Casino’s Richmond Valley Meats have hams that are cured at the shop.

Darragh’s Butcher at the Plaza do a bone ham for $16.99/kg. It is local pork smoked at the butchers for 12 hours.
