As the sun set over Casino, the lights of almost 200 trucks beamed onto Barker and Walker streets, creating a dreamlike spectacle.
It was Friday Night Lights – part of the Casino Truck Show.
Even though people were talking, walking and taking photos of the truck lights, there was a calmness – a reverence almost for the sheer size and number of trucks packed into the CBD.
All day there had been the sound of the big rigs pulling into town, and with a deftness only a truck driver knows, they each reversed their trucks into a tight space.
As the rows of trucks grew, so did the crowds. Wandering the streets checking out the polished chrome and engines.
There was the crew from Airlie Beach who drive south every year for the truck show.
One couple from the far western corner of South Australia had portable stands filled with photos from their cattle property.
The truckies shared stories over a few beers, and then as it became dark and the lights came on – the noisy engines were quiet and the lights were reminiscent of a fairytale.
And plenty of people came to see what it was like.
Tomorrow, Saturday, August 2 is the truck parade at 10am along Johnston and Centre Street and then all the trucks will be parked in the CBD.
