A year ago, a group of residents got together to reopen the community centre in their village.

Daina Walker along with other volunteers, Penny May, Graham Walsh, Eva Henley, Tamara Head and Jolanda Moyle set to restoring the Cawongla Community Centre because they wanted it to be a hub for the village again.

Cawongla sits in the hills between Kyogle and Nimbin.

The building on Crown Land, next to the preschool was dormant for years, Daina said.

A year ago, the steering committee started renovating the building.

“I’m a mum at the preschool and I wanted to get the centre back open,” Daina said.

We’ve got the power back on, a new fridge and appliances, she said.

“We want it to be central hub for the community.”

The best way to bring in money to keep the centre going is for people to book the centre for classes and events, she said.

The committee have deliberately kept the hire fees low to attract users.

The official opening is this Saturday, June 1 at 11am–2pm.

There will be a free barbecue, live music and 10 artists will exhibit their work.

Wood by Mossy has donated a wooden bowl for a lucky door prize.

This handcrafted bowl by Wood by Mossy is the lucky door prize.

A raffle has been running and the prize is two custom-made barrel chairs worth $500. The wide chairs are unusual and could be yours.

Buy a raffle ticket at Cawongla Store for $2 or three for $5. Tickets will be sold at the opening.

Take a scenic drive to Cawongla this Saturday to Cawongla Community Centre, 5325 Kyogle Road (next to the Cawongla Preschool).
