UPDATE: Lightning and heavy rain cause power outages for 3600 homes

This Essential Energy map shows where the outages were at 7.30pm.

UPDATE AT 9.30PM

More than 3600 homes and businesses across Casino, Casino North, Shannon Brook, Leeville, Tatham, Clovass, Greenridge, Irvington, McKees Hill, Codrington, Mallanganee, Urbenville, Bonalbo, Kyogle and surrounding areas had their power interrupted from 7pm tonight after an intense storm swept through the area.

Major powerlines and zone substations in the area were impacted by lightning and heavy rain, causing safety equipment to operate, isolating power to keep the community safe until crews could investigate any damage.

Crews immediately started a patrol of the electricity network, progressively restoring power to impacted customers as the safety of the electricity network was confirmed.

Currently, 93 customers remain without power. Crews continue to patrol the electricity network and will restore power as quickly as safety will allow.

Essential Energy thanks the community for its patience while our teams work to safely restore power and remind the community to stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines, damaged electricity equipment, fires or trees contacting powerlines, and immediately report it to Essential Energy on 13 20 80 or call Triple-0 if the situation is life threatening.
