There was going to be a cultural burn at the Jabiru Wetlands starting today, Monday, August 10 but the burn has been delayed and will start on Tuesday, August 11 becuase of wet weather.

The burn is expected to continue until Thursday, August 13.

Richmond Valley Council has engaged Jagun Alliance Aboriginal Corporation and Big Scrub Bush Regeneration to undertake the burn at Richmond Park/Jabiru Wetlands on Queensland Road, Casino.

The burn will cover three designated areas and is part of the ongoing regeneration work to restore ecological balance to the wetlands and encourage the return of native bird and animal species.

The council will close Queensland Road for public safety. Fire and Rescue NSW and the RFS have been notified.

Nearby residents and businesses are advised to take appropriate precautions to minimise smoke entering their premises, particularly in the event of a change in wind direction.

The council acknowledges the financial support from the NSW Government through the Northern Rivers Watershed Initiative for this project as well as the traditional owners of Jabiru Wetlands.
