Following in his father’s footsteps, Ty Phelps, 14, is riding bulls.
The Casino High School student spends the weekends travelling long distances to compete in rodeos.
He’s only been riding for two years and is already sixth in the National Standing of Under 15 bull riders.
He won two buckles this year and is competing at the Ipswich Show this weekend, November 22.
He’s got the knack and isn’t scared when he’s about to ride a bull.
“It’s like a dancing partner,” Ty said.
“When the bull makes a move, you react.”
Ty does his best to stay on the bull for eight seconds before the whistle blows.
He had a recent injury at a rodeo in Queensland when he came off and the bull came down on his leg.
There was some bruising and muscle damage but he has recovered.
Ty said he is inspired by his cousin Rawley McWhirter who also rides bulls.
Ty is getting support from the P&C at his school but what he really needs is a sponsor to help with the costs of getting to the rodeos.
“Any sponsorship is helpful,” Ty said.
He is keen to put a sponsor’s logo on a patch on his vest he wears when riding.
Ty lives in Casino with his parents, Luke and Kylie.
Luke grew up in Urbenville and used to ride rodeos there.
