Disheartened, disappointed and disillusioned – that is how Kyogle Council described its response to the break-in at the Mallanganee Lookout.

The observatory was only officially opened 10 days ago and the council said it was a devastating blow to have equipment worth $20,000 stolen.

The offenders forced entry into the rear service corridor in the amenities block at the site and stole essential electrical infrastructure that powers the site, including lighting and water pumps for the toilets.

The council said it appears to be a professional job and the theft creates uncertainty around when the facility can be fully operational again.

The incident has been reported to police.

If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area or have information that may assist, contact NSW Police and quote Report Number R0001497433.

The council urges those responsible to do the right thing and return the stolen items.
