Jarrett and Nicholls bring a champion Speckle Park to the ring

ABOVE: Murray Nicholls leads the lightweight champion owned by Tom Jarrett and Heidi Nicholls.

Murray Nicholls from Tookawhile at Rukenvale has won many ribbons for his cattle. This time, on Wednesday, May 25, in the Beef Week cattle ring, he was supporting his daughter.

Tom Jarrett and Heidi Nicholls had the Speckle Park they bought from Casino saleyards and a Limousin cross in the cattle ring at Barker St, outside the Tatts Hotel.

Heidi has been showing cattle all her life.

“Even as a baby,” Murray said.

It was the first time Tom and Heidi selected, bought and prepared the steers independently.

“We bought them as weaners and fed them for 70 days,” Heidi said.

“We fed them on a grain mix.”

Murray said what was in the barley based feed is a secret.

“You plan to have them as good as you can on the day,” he said.

The pair headed to the show ring.

Heidi said it was important to remain calm in the ring.

The Speckle Park won its lightweight steer category and went on to win Grand Champion lightweight steer.
